More graduate insights
We continue to celebrate the success of our Mirus Graduate Assessment Programme with the 2024/5 cohort of graduates that have now progressed to become ‘engineers'.
Four keen graduate engineers embarked on their exciting journey with Mirus; James – Graduate Certification Engineer, Georgy – Graduate Design Engineer, Amelie – Graduate Design & Development Engineer and Ifan – Graduate Design & Development Engineer.
We caught up with James and Georgy to share their experiences, insights and thoughts about the Mirus Graduate Programme and also any advice they have for new graduates considering joining us.
What appealed to you about the graduate programme here?
Georgy: “I was drawn to the graduate programme at Mirus by the opportunity to make an impact within a small but rapidly growing company. The grad programme provided a great opportunity to experience different sectors within engineering such as Applications Engineering, some New Product Development and Certification”.
James: “The Mirus graduate programme was a great opportunity to transition from university into a challenging technical role and begin my career in the field I have long aspired to work in.
The team at Mirus are clearly passionate about what they do, and their success is clearly reflected in the company’s rapid growth. As someone new to the industry, I’m drawn to this kind of environment — one where I can learn from driven, motivated individuals.
Since joining, I’ve had the opportunity to work with an amazing team, gain new skills, contribute to delivering products to the finish line, and deepen my knowledge and insight into both design and certification of aircraft seating”.
During your time as a grad, what new practical experiences were learnt, or developed?
Georgy: “I’ve enjoyed gaining insights into static and dynamic testing at M-TEST which Mirus are fortunate to have on their doorstep. It’s been great to see and learn from some of the set-up processes required to carry out the tests. As part of the programme I have also gained valuable experience in designing new parts to solve problems while considering manufacturing and assembly limitations. One very important skill I developed is the ability to deal with high pressure situations and tight deadlines.”
James: ” During my time as a graduate, I gained extensive hands-on experience and exposure to both dynamic and static testing of aircraft seats at M-TEST. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to be involved in the certification of current Mirus seats, including writing test plans, reports, reviewing engineering drawings and analysing test data — done with valuable guidance from supportive colleagues.
I am grateful to have an exceptional mentor, Kabita, who has provided invaluable support and guidance while building my confidence. Her support has meant I’ve been able to confidently progress my career as a certification engineer”.
What was your biggest challenge and what have you enjoyed most during your time as a grad?
Georgy: “Accepting responsibility over important documentation and solving urgent problems early into my time at Mirus was daunting and a personal challenge, but I received good support from the team and mentor which has helped develop my organisational and time management skills.”
James: “At first, my biggest challenge was adjusting to the fast-paced environment. The volume and urgency of tasks for multiple concurrent projects, alongside tight deadlines, required me to quickly develop effective time management skills. Guidance from my colleagues helped me to stay organized and focused under pressure.
I enjoy working with my team as they are very passionate about what they do. My colleagues have taught me a lot, they encourage a positive work environment and ensure everyone in the team feels valued and respected. The team works with dedication while still sharing moments of light-hearted fun along the way.”
What has been your standout moment during your year as a grad?
Georgy: “My standout moment so far has been helping deliver the Hawk Linefit and Hawk Baseline projects. I was involved in some of the design, testing and documentation for both these projects. The projects provided plenty of challenges, but in the end we delivered something that I am proud to say I was part of.”
James: “So far, my standout moment is being actively involved in one of the Hawk Linefit programmes. Early on I was fortunate to witness most of the dynamic, static and flammability testing carried for this programme. This gave me valuable insights into regulatory and testing requirements for aircraft seats. I have also had the chance to apply what I’ve learnt related to airworthiness standards from university, and further gain industry knowledge from the experienced team here“.
What advice would you give to future grads looking to come to Mirus?
Joining a smaller company has been great as you learn so much, so quickly. Mirus has many talented and experienced engineers, and the team here are always willing to support graduates. At Mirus you will have a real opportunity to have a large input into the products and feel part of the Mirus journey.
Georgy
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We all have to start from somewhere and the team at Mirus are very understanding, and always willing to help and see people succeed.
