Our time as graduates…
The Mirus Graduate Assessment Programme provides excellent support and development to those with the foundation skills, aptitude, and attitude to become the best engineers in their aerospace fields.
Four keen graduate engineers embarked on their exciting journey with Mirus; James – Graduate Certification Engineer, Georgy – Graduate Design Engineer, Amelie – Graduate Design & Development Engineer and Ifan – Graduate Design & Development Engineer.
We are delighted to say that all four graduates contributed positively to their teams and have progressed to become ‘engineers’.
As we welcome our graduates to the team, we caught up with all four graduates and to share their experiences and thoughts about the Mirus Graduate Programme and also advice they have for new graduates considering joining us.
First up are Amelie and Ifan. We will be catching up with James and Georgy too so keep your eyes peeled for their great insights too.
What appealed to you about the graduate programme here?
Ifan: “For me, Mirus is a growing aerospace company and it seemed a great opportunity to make a real contribution from the start of the programme and the flexibility to get involved with a much broader range of topics compared to most grad schemes that I had seen.
The idea of going through initial concepting, physically prototyping on site, working alongside the simulations team, and then seeing live tests in the M-TEST facility really appealed to me.”
Amelie: “The graduate scheme at appealed to me as it was clear that Mirus is a highly collaborative environment, where you are free to express ideas as you grow and gain knowledge as an engineer.
The M-TEST testing facility that Mirus has direct access to appealed to me, as it made the graduate programme a unique proposition, with the opportunity to witness tests inhouse, which I find highly fascinating. Being based at Mirus HQ based in Hingham, Norfolk the location is close to me and an idyllic, beautiful place to work too.”
During your time as a grad, what new practical experiences were learnt, or developed?
Ifan: “Alongside developing my 3D modelling skills, I’ve also had the opportunity to learn some new practical skills. These include prototyping parts with the on-site 3D printer, getting involved with building prototype seats, as well as being able to contribute to the extensive testing we do.
It’s also been really satisfying utilising and developing knowledge from my university degree, whether that be materials knowledge or stress calculations, to solve real, practical engineering challenges with the team.”
Amelie: “Throughout my year here at Mirus, my CAD skills have developed way beyond what I was taught at university. I’ve had the chance to get involved in hands on work, with physically validating and refining designs through 3D rapid prototyping. My engineering knowledge has also grown due to the support of the engineering team here at Mirus. The team have such an abundance of experience and expertise, that it’s been a privilege to learn and have the support from great mentors.”
What was your biggest challenge and what have you enjoyed most during your time as a grad?
Ifan: “The main area that I’ve seen improvement in is my confidence presenting technical information, with opportunities to visit customers in person and leading internal discussions with people from various departments.
I’ve made some really great friends and mentors, who have helped both develop my technical skills and knowledge, as well as helping me settle into the area – The rock climbing, go karting and occasional curry night helped too!.”
Amelie: “As part of the projects I’ve worked on, I’ve found that researching the flammability requirements of seat components to be both challenging as well as interesting. During my year here my knowledge of these certification requirements has widely developed, which has allowed me to gain a greater understanding of flammability considerations when designing parts”.
What has been your standout moment during your year as a grad?
Ifan: “The standout moment for me has to be seeing a part that I had designed go from an initial concept to passing a test on the M-TEST sled. It was great seeing the hard work pay off and see the test in person. I hope to see it during a flight at some point.”
Amelie: “My standout moment would be seeing the parts I have worked on and helped design, be physically produced and held in front of me. Through the combination of working with a range of departments and numerous suppliers to refine designs, it gives me a great sense of pride to see these parts being displayed on Hawk Duo seats and exhibited at shows like AIX”.
What advice would you give to future grads looking to come to Mirus?
Get stuck in, ask questions and try your hand at anything that takes your interest. It’s a great opportunity to both improve the skills you’ve already developed over the years, as well as to learn completely new skills that you’ve not had the chance to try before.
Ifan
