Our time as a graduate….
Last summer, Mirus held their first Graduate Assessment Centre with an aim of providing excellent support and development to those with the foundation skills, aptitude, and attitude to become the best aerospace engineers in their field.
The event was a success with 4 graduates; Alastair Hancock – Graduate Stress Engineer, Matthew Sills – Graduate Design & Development Engineer, Art Lawton – Graduate Certification Engineer and Will Gallichan – Graduate Design Engineer embarking on their exciting grad journey with us.
All four graduates positively contributed to their team and we are delighted to say that they have progressed to become ‘engineers’.
As we welcome our new grads to the Mirus team, we caught up with Will and Matt, two of our graduates to ask them about their thoughts and experiences about the Mirus Graduate Programme and what advice they have for new graduates considering joining us on our journey.
What appealed to you about the graduate programme here?
Will: “As a relatively young and growing company, the opportunity to join Mirus appealed as I was looking for somewhere I could develop and take on more responsibility very quickly
Having project visibility, good mentoring and support to try different fields and not being too pigeon holed was a big appeal to me when deciding to take on the grad programme with Mirus.
A standout for me, working in the Applications Team within Mirus, has been the opportunity to be involved in both design and certification work which has enabled me to broaden my knowledge in both fields. It has also been great to working closely with other departments to co-ordinate efforts and hit the targets set. It’s been great to feel part of the team.”
Matt: “I was born, raised and have lived in Norfolk my whole life. Norfolk is a great county, and I find the pace of life much calmer than living in a big city. Life here offers me all I need and whilst I have ambition to work in aerospace; an ever-advancing market for design and innovation, I wanted to preserve my work/life balance. The opportunity at Mirus affords me the opportunity to both live in the county I love, whilst progressing my career.
Mirus has given me the opportunity to start my engineering career within the aerospace industry. My role as Design and Development Engineer allows me to utilise and advance the CAD skills I learnt at university while I develop parts to help evolve the products of the future. I feel a great sense of pride from seeing something that I have designed becoming reality and seeing it on a seat.”
During your time as a grad, what experiences were learnt, what was your biggest challenge and what have you enjoyed the most?
Will: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a graduate engineer within Mirus and have learnt a lot at the same time.
The greatest personal improvement I have made personally since joining Mirus, has been my confidence. Developing this skill has helped me when delivering technical information to different internal and external stakeholders. I have been able to do this as it has been nurtured through guidance from mentors and the continuous requirement to communicate the findings and implications of my work to seniors, other departments and suppliers.”
Matt: “At uni I really enjoyed the CAD modules, and also being hands on. Working at Mirus has given me opportunity to do exactly that. The balance between virtual and practical work has been great and I have enjoyed working on the various projects with the team.
I’ve learnt from the engineers here who have with vast range of knowledge and experience from an array of different engineering fields. I even had the opportunity to visit suppliers within the country and Europe…(I can’t imagine too many grad schemes give you the chance to visit many off-site locations).
Everyone is friendly, helpful and supportive. It’s been good to have made friends, who are now part of my social life outside work, and we go golfing nearly every week. The working environment has a great mixture of serious work but also light-hearted fun.
My time at Mirus has helped me become a more confident person in all aspects of my life, and I hope this is the case for most grad on their schemes.”
What advice would you give to future grads looking to come to Mirus?
Embrace the opportunity! As a graduate everything is new and because there is so much to learn and take in and it can be quite daunting. Getting stuck in and learning is the fastest route to graduating from graduate status!
Will Gallichan
Mirus has given me the opportunity to develop the skills I learnt at uni, but also teach me things that are not experienced during the uni years.
Matthew Sill
It’s a great journey to overcome the challenges we face on a daily basis and I enjoy the balance of individual work and teamwork.
Come along and meet us at our Graduate Fairs:
Loughborough Autumn Careers Fair: 15.10.24
Brunel’s Autumn Placement & Careers Fair: 22.10.24
We will also be at the Greenpower finals at Goodwood on 13th October and would love to speak to any grads interested in engineering.
